Fungal Nail Treatment

A fungal nail infection, or onychomycosis, is very common. Fungal nail infections can affect the nail plate and bed, causing the nail to discolour (often to yellow or brown), thicken, crumble, and potentially separate from the skin.

You may have noticed changes in the texture, quality, and colour of your toe nails. Generally this change is noted after the application of a varnish or gels have been removed. Typical first signs are a yellowing or brown discoloration, nails may become thick, crumbly, or brittle. Nails can become distorted, misshapen, and may lift from the nail bed causing a yellow discolouration.

Onychomycosis is the most difficult of the superficial fungal infections to treat, as most topical agents are ineffective at penetrating the nail plate to reach the active infection on the nail bed (the skin under the nail).

A Podiatrist can help by thinning the nail regularly while advising you on the best topical agents to allow the best penetration of treatment to the nail bed. We can also recommend other options like oral therapies, laser treatment, or cosmetic management options.
